Northwest Fencing spotlights fencers who not only are great athletes, but also help to make the fencing community united, welcoming, and supportive. Without further ado, allow us to introduce you to Alesia!
We asked Alesia questions about how she got started in fencing, what she’s working on currently, and some fun facts about herself!
How and when did you start fencing?
I started fencing in 2021 with Vivienne, my friend from school. My first time at Northwest Fencing Center was a birthday party. Before fencing I took ballet and gymnastics classes.
What draws you to the sport?
It is unique and cool, I don’t know anyone at school who fences. I like single sports, not teams.
What is your favorite part?
The actual fencing, warm ups are hard. I have fun with Sophia during class, cheering for each other, & debriefing at tournaments.
When was your first tournament?
Fall of October 2021 at a PNWC- I was nervous but really excited. It was my first time fencing electric. A youth tournament in Bellevue was the first away tournament.
What is a memorable experience?
Athena camp! It’s exciting because I’ve never had a female coach and trained with all girls for a whole weekend.
What is your favorite part of the club?
There are so many people to fence of all ages and everyone helps each other. I like having so many mentors, it’s very helpful.
How many times per week are you at the club?
I’m in the Core class and sometimes I come for open bouting and I take 1 lesson per week.
What are you working on?
Working on fleche, going to the hand, and getting faster.
What is something your fellow athletes may not know about you?
I’m fluent in German, I went to German school for 9 years.
Favorite foods before tournaments?
Mac and cheese, caffeine (Starbucks iced matcha latte or iced mocha), bananas, & smoothies.
We hoped you enjoyed this fencer spotlight and learning a little bit more about Alesia! Stay tuned for the next spotlight!
