What is the Athena Project?

The Athena Project is a national fencing initiative launched by Michael McTique — former coach and executive director at Northwest Fencing Center — and supported by USA Fencing and clubs like NWFC. It is dedicated to empowering women and girls in every aspect of the sport, creating more opportunities for them to succeed and lead as athletes, coaches, mentors, and administrators. 

Mission: 

The mission is to build a more inclusive, equitable, and inspiring fencing community. It focuses on:

  • Empowering women and girls to achieve their full potential.
  • Promoting diversity, mental health, teamwork, and self-confidence.
  • Transforming fencing culture into one that is welcoming and supportive.

Events and Activities:

The Athena Project organizes a variety of programs designed to support growth, development, and leadership, including:

  • Women-Only Camps & Clinics
  • December 2023: First two-day camp for fencers aged 12 and up, focused on foil and epee.
  • August 2024: A weeklong, three-weapon camp (foil, epee, saber) held in Portland, Oregon.
  • March 16, 2025: One-day training event for foil and epee.
  • May 3-4, 2025: Two-day camp for foil and epee. (adults +21 & veterans).
  • November 22–23, 2025: Foil and epee camp for veteran and adult women (18+).
  • Summer 2026: A five-day camp (details to be announced).
Where the Athena Project is Located:

The events are hosted at the Northwest Fencing Center in Tigard, Oregon (Portland area). The facility, inaugurated in 2022, features 21 grounded electric strips, a fully equipped armory, and a dedicated spectator space — creating an ideal environment for training, learning, and competition.
